# James Connolly > Final-year BSc Computer Systems student at the University of Limerick (First Class Honours standing, graduating May 2027). Most recently a Software Engineering Intern at Microsoft Azure Core; before that a Junior Developer at Deloitte. Works on release engineering, CI/CD, build optimisation and test automation. Looking for graduate roles in software and site reliability engineering. The agent starts and monitors deployments on its own and sends the relevant approval links and next release steps to people through Microsoft Graph, so developers no longer wait on or babysit releases, with every required gate checked before code reaches production. Profiled CI bottlenecks and added targeted pipeline task caching, cutting build runtimes by up to 33%; because many developers constantly create new builds, the savings compound to 80+ hours of developer time per week. - **Junior Developer, Deloitte, Public Sector & Enterprise Solutions, Dublin (May 2025 - Feb 2026).** Started test automation for the team with a Playwright regression framework of 400+ end-to-end tests. Each test runs in about 3 minutes and replaces 20-40 minutes of manual testing, saving an estimated 130+ hours per full regression cycle. Deloitte formed a dedicated Test Automation team after the placement to take the framework forward. Also built full-stack features in C#, JavaScript, Blazor, KnockoutJS and CSS with SQL Server (SSMS), Redis and Azure DevOps, in an Agile Scrum team. Selected attendee of the Deloitte Future Leaders Academy and student brand representative for Deloitte at the University of Limerick Careers Fair. - **Research & Software Development Intern, Biocomputing and Development Systems Group, University of Limerick (May 2024 - Aug 2024).** Built an R/Shiny app for exploring biological and medical datasets; a predictive pre-loading design cut view load times by 38%. Gave weekly technical research presentations to senior researchers. Paper details: https://lnkd.in/gB7F9P3D Presented undergraduate research at the 12th All-Ireland Conference of Undergraduate Research (AICUR 2025), University of Limerick, 3 April 2025. ## Education - BSc Computer Systems, University of Limerick, graduating May 2027. First Class Honours (1:1) standing. - Alice Coffey Student Implementation Prize: 1st place, Undergraduate Level (15 June 2026). Awarded by the Centre for Implementation Research at UL (CIRcUL) for the best application of implementation science within a student research project. - Fidelis Partnership Scholarship for academic excellence and industry promise (November 2025). One of eight University of Limerick students chosen for 2025-26: seven business students, and James as the only computer science student. Includes mentoring from the Fidelis Partnership, one of the largest managing general underwriters in the world. - Final year project (in progress): "An Adaptive Optimization Framework for Reducing Data Movement Overhead Using ML-Guided Zero-Copy Techniques". Compares four ways of gathering table rows onto the GPU (explicit copy, zero-copy, Unified Memory, Unified Memory with prefetching) in the retrieval stage of Graph RAG, aiming to use machine learning to pick the best per batch. Early preview runs on a Tesla T4 (October 2026) are promising: picking the best method per batch was 2.5x faster than the standard explicit copy across 48 test points, and the best and worst methods differed by up to 389x on one workload. Final results will come from the university's GPU cluster. ## Leadership and activities - UL Tennis Club: Treasurer (2023/24, 2024/25), Chairperson (2025/26), Treasurer again (2026/27). Events for 250+ members a year. As Treasurer, secured the club's initial equipment through a university fund that supports clubs, helping the club grow from 80 to 300 members. - ICT Learning Centre, University of Limerick: Peer Supported Learning Group leader (2024/25); drop-in tutor (2025/26, 2026/27). 100+ students tutored, giving ad hoc help to students who are stuck. - Google workshops, Dublin: Google Code Retreat (May 2025; TDD, clean-code refactoring), Datadog & Google SRE Workshop (June 2025; SLOs, deployment architecture), selected through a competitive nationwide process for Google's Algorithms Workshop, an advanced algorithms masterclass with Google engineers (October 2025; dynamic programming, computational complexity). Code Retreat covered paired programming, TDD, modular system design and clean-code refactoring. ## Skills - Languages: Python, Java, C#, C, SQL, JavaScript, R, HTML/CSS - Cloud and delivery: Azure, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, CI/CD pipelines, Docker, Linux, NGINX, Git - Data and observability: Redis, Elasticsearch, DynamoDB, SQL Server, Grafana, REST APIs - Testing and frameworks: Playwright, Blazor, KnockoutJS, Shiny, Unity ## Outside of work Tennis, programming, building computers, cars, and time with family and girlfriend. Has been driving for four years and owns a 2007 Honda Civic Type R (FN2) and a 2011 Audi A7 quattro.
