Software Engineering Intern
Azure Core, Dublin
I really enjoyed my time at Microsoft. I worked on the Azure Core infrastructure engineering team, focusing on deployment automation and CI/CD optimisation.
Knowledge about how to ship a release was spread out and siloed. Shipping meant juggling about 15 tabs and bookmarks, and the approval links and next steps for a release were often hard to find. So I built an end-to-end release orchestration agent that brings all of that together into one simple, direct tool.
The agent can start deployments on its own and monitor them as they run. It finds the approval links and next release steps that are usually buried, and sends them straight to the people involved through Microsoft Graph. Developers no longer had to wait on releases or watch them so closely, and shipping became much safer and more streamlined, with the production compliance checks automated and every required gate checked before code reaches production.
I also dug into our continuous integration bottlenecks and added targeted pipeline task caching, which cut build runtimes by up to 33%. With so many developers constantly creating new builds, the savings compounded across every build, adding up to more than 80 hours of developer time saved each week.
